The
composers of SOS met as participants during the inaugural
season of American Opera Projects’ “Composers and the
Voice” series, with meetings held on South Oxford Street in
Brooklyn. Though their musical styles varied greatly from
one composer to the next, the members shared a common
appreciation for one another’s work, and established
themselves as an independent entity with the mission of
presenting concerts of new music. To date, they have
presented concerts in 2004 at Symphony Space's Thalia
Theatre, in 2005 at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, in
October 2006 at the Broadway Presbyterian Church in
Manhattan, and in Sombor, Zrenjanin, and Novi Sad, Serbia,
all in 2007. Upcoming projects include collaborations with
the Momenta String Quartet and a repeat of the week-long
workshop, Summer in Sombor. While the group originally
contained six members, recently original member Arthur
Rosen withdrew from the day to day workings of the
collective. There are currently five active members of the
group.
